FOR INDIVIDUALS & FAMILIES

How we help…

Getting the most out of life doesn’t just mean living for the moment.

It also means focusing on the future you hope for, and taking steps to bring it about. We work closely with you to create a long-term financial plan designed around you and your family – one that considers the life you lead today and also takes care of tomorrow.

Our Services

Investment Planning

Making the right investment choices is key to growing the wealth you’ll need to achieve your future goals and aspirations.

There are a huge range of options available to those with wealth to invest, but without expert guidance, the possibilities can seem confusing and even overwhelming.

Our approach is to build an investment plan around you and your family – one that takes account of your current circumstances, your future plans, and what you want to do with your wealth over the years to come.

With access to the risk-rated portfolios offered by St. James’s Place, we can create a diversified and balanced investment solution that matches your personal goals and your attitude to risk. And because your investment plan is designed for the long-term, we’ll make sure you’re kept up-to-date on its progress, with regular reviews to keep it on track for the future you want.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

ISAs

Individual savings accounts, or ISAs as they’re commonly known, are a flexible and accessible way to both save and invest for the future.

A cash ISA may be a suitable home for some of your cash savings, but we will also help you consider the right stocks and shares ISA, where appropriate, in order to take advantage of potential investment growth while protecting the gains from capital gains tax and income tax. As always, your solution is designed around you, so whether you’re looking for income or capital growth, we can advise you on the ISA choice that meets your needs.

The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Cash ISAs are not available through St. James’s Place.

Junior ISAs

It’s no secret that the financial challenges facing today’s young people as they grow towards adulthood can be significant.

There are university fees to plan for, while rising property costs mean that it can be difficult to raise the deposit required to buy a first home. A junior ISA can be a great way to introduce young people to the benefits of regular saving, and can form an important part of your family’s overall financial plan. Using a junior ISA as a flexible savings vehicle can really make a difference to young people’s longer term future.

The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may be subject to changes in legislation in the future.

Unit trusts

Managed by professional fund managers, unit trusts can include stocks, property and bonds.

They are useful investment vehicles as part of your overall portfolio, particularly when the gains are protected from capital gains tax and income tax as part of an individual savings account, or ISA. Unit trusts are particularly suited to investors looking for growth over the medium to long term, and we’ll consider them where appropriate as part of your overall financial plan.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

Growth and income portfolios

As a Senior Partner Practice with St. James’s Place, we have access to a range of risk-rated growth and income portfolios created from St. James’s Place funds.

This means we can match portfolios to your attitude to risk while meeting your specific investment needs – whether that means building the value of your wealth over the medium to long term, or generating an attractive and sustainable level of income.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Discretionary and stockbroking services

If you have specific investment requirements or you’d like to delegate control of your investments to us, our discretionary and stockbroking services – provided by Rowan Dartington, who are wholly owned by the St. James’s Place Group –enable you to take the investment path that suits your needs.

If you choose our discretionary service, a dedicated investment manager from Rowan Dartington will work with you to create your bespoke portfolio, and manage it on a discretionary basis. Our stockbroking service allows you to manage your own portfolio, with advice available on investments and a straightforward dealing service if you know exactly what you want to buy and sell.

The value of an investment with Rowan Dartington may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

Offshore investments

Investment in offshore funds may be an appropriate option for you, giving you access to a wider variety of financial products and investments than is available within the UK.

We have a range of offshore options available, along with the expertise required to advise you and help administer your investments as part of your overall financial plan. Whatever your reason for considering offshore investments, we’ll guide you through the process and make sure your investing experience is as smooth as possible.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Currency movements may also affect the value of investments.

Investing for income

If you’re looking to earn a regular income from your investments, we can help you navigate the options available and choose the right home for your capital.

By putting together a diversified, personally tailored portfolio, we can help you take advantage of a range of income sources including fixed interest bonds and gilts, equities (as despite their short-term volatility, they have historically outperformed other asset classes over the longer term), and rental income from commercial property.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and the value may therefore fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

An investment in equities does not provide the security of capital associated with a deposit account with a bank or building society.

Investment bonds

Today’s low interest rate environment has led to many investors seeking better returns elsewhere.

We have access to the St. James’s Place investment bond – a simple, flexible solution that can play an important role in your financial plan, potentially addressing your income, capital growth and tax planning needs. This distinctive investment bond diversifies your investments and spreads risk, and gives you the freedom to switch funds easily as your priorities and circumstances change.

Retirement planning

Although most people understand that an early start is almost always an advantage when it comes to planning for retirement, many find it difficult to focus on an event that may seem far in the future.

However, we’ll help you make sure that whatever your age and wherever you are in your career, retirement plays a key role in your financial plan. With the right financial arrangements in place, you can look forward to the retirement you’ve always hoped for rather than the only one you can happen to afford.

We’ll ask about your goals and aspirations, and make sure that they are at the heart of your financial plan. We’ll also take a look at your family circumstances and discuss the kind of benefits you may want to pass on to your loved ones – along with the tax implications of the decisions you make.

Whether retirement remains a distant prospect or it’s something that’s fast approaching, your financial plan will give you the peace of mind that comes when you know you’re well prepared for the future you want. You might be looking forward to having the time to enjoy more holidays or indulge your passions and hobbies. However you’re hoping to spend your retirement, we’ll help make sure that you’re financially prepared for those months and years ahead.

Maximising your pension fund

Pensions have been at the heart of financial planning for a long time, and although their finer points are subject to regular change, they remain a highly tax efficient component of most people’s financial plan.

Expert advice is essential, however, if you’re to maximise the opportunities they present, and we’ll guide you through the options in order to make the most of all your pension allowances. From understanding the tapered annual allowance to carrying forward unused reliefs and taking advantage of the lifetime allowance, we’ll ensure your pension arrangements are working as hard as they can.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.

Planning retirement

Helping people like you plan for retirement is fundamental to what we do, and you can rely on us to guide you through the process of making sure you’re ready for this exciting and potentially rewarding time of life.

There are many elements that combine to form an effective plan for retirement, from self-invested pension plans (SIPPs) and trustee schemes to annuities and drawdown plans, and we’ll manage them all expertly to create a financial plan designed around you and your aspirations.

Nearing retirement

As retirement approaches, there will be a number of key decisions you need to make.

Good advice is crucial if you are to make the best choices for you and your family, and our expert team will guide you through your important financial decisions. From choosing the right annuity to navigating other options, including flexi-access drawdown and taking lump sums from your pension pot, we’ll help you understand the pros and cons of each course of action. You can rest assured that with us alongside you, you’ll head into retirement in good financial health.

Self-invested pension plans

For some people, traditional pension plans will be the right option, but for others, the wider range of investment opportunities offered by self-invested pension plans, or ‘SIPPs’, will prove attractive.

SIPPs give you greater flexibility to make your own financial choices, but due to the higher costs, active management is necessary in order to maximise the potential benefits. However, if you have the appropriate experience and want to take control of your pension pot, we’ll guide and advise you along the way.

The value of a SIPP can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

The flexibility of a SIPP allows you to spread the risk, especially if some investments perform badly. However, these do tend to have higher costs than a standard pension and active management is essential to maximise the benefits of the wider investment choice on offer. For these reasons, they will not be suitable for everybody and generally only those who are fairly experienced at actively managing their investment should consider this type of investment.

Employment

Because we take time to understand you and tailor our financial planning to your specific situation, we can help those in employment to plan ahead and think about how much they’ll need in order to retire comfortably.

Thanks to healthier lifestyles and medical advances, we are generally living longer than previous generations, and effective planning is essential in order to make sure you don’t outlive your savings. No matter where you are in the planning process, we’ll help you think about the life you want to lead in retirement, and put arrangements in place that can help you achieve your goals.

Employer

Since the introduction of auto enrolment in 2012, employers have been obliged to enrol all eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme and make contributions to it.

If you’re an employer, we work closely with you to help make sure you’re meeting your pension obligations, and can help ensure that the pension provision you offer enhances the recruitment and retention of good quality staff. Plus, with our support, you’ll be well prepared for future changes in employers’ pension legislation.

The value of a pension with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Self-employment

Without access to an occupational pension scheme, the self-employed must make their own pension arrangements if they are to avoid finding themselves with insufficient wealth to fund their retirement plans.

We can help you review your current arrangements, if any, and put together a plan that will help you prepare for your comfort and security in retirement.

The value of a pension with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Trustees

Being a trustee of a defined benefit pension scheme is a position of trust and responsibility, and if this is a role you play, it’s important to feel you have expert advice and support when you need it.

We understand the challenges that face trustees, and have a number of solutions available that are designed to help you deliver the service that scheme members deserve while ensuring that the scheme continues to offer good value.

Estate planning

You work hard for your wealth, and it’s only natural to want to protect your assets for the benefit of you and your family.

We all have tax obligations that we need to meet, but no one wants to feel they’re paying more tax than they need to. Without careful planning, however, you may find that your wealth is subject to taxes that you hadn’t bargained for – and that can mean there’s less to pass on to your beneficiaries, or they may even find themselves dealing with an unexpected tax burden after your death.

As with other areas of financial planning, it’s important to look at the big picture rather than focusing on specific areas in isolation. Our approach is to consider the protection of your estate in the context of your wider financial plan, guiding you through the various insurance options, will writing, powers of attorney and other services, as well as mitigating the effects of inheritance tax.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.

Will writing and Powers of Attorney involve the referral to a service which is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James’s Place and are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Inheritance tax

It used to be the case that inheritance tax was only a concern for the very wealthy, but today, even modest estates can be impacted by it, and if your estate is large, the tax authorities can take a very big slice.

For this reason, it’s more important than ever to include effective inheritance tax planning in your overall financial plan, and our expert team can help you mitigate its effects. From making sure your will is written correctly, to making prudent use of gifts during your lifetime, we’ll help protect you from paying more inheritance tax than you need to, and make sure more of your estate goes to the people you want to benefit most.

Gifts

Gifting during your lifetime can be one of the most effective ways of mitigating the effects of inheritance tax.

With a range of approaches available, we can help you consider the advantages of each option and select the route that matches your own specific circumstances. We’ll take you through the various allowances and exemptions, and guide you through the obligations and exceptions effectively. Whether you want to gift to members of your family, other individuals, or organisations such as cultural institutions or charities, we’ll help you make sure that your gift complies with current tax legislation and can be used by the people you want to benefit.

Protection planning

Most people understand that some types of insurance are necessary, whether they are legal obligations such as vehicle insurance, or whether their purchase is a personal choice, such as home insurance.

However insurances such as income protection and critical illness cover are less well understood, but when you consider the impact that serious illness or sudden injury could have on your income, it becomes clear that it’s actually one of the most important steps you can take.

We’ll help you address all these areas of protection, working with carefully selected providers to deliver insurance solutions tailored to your needs.

Later life planning

Today’s longer life expectancy brings many benefits, but without careful planning, many of us could also find ourselves facing financial challenges in our later years.

We can help you plan for the whole of your life, including the later stages when you may find you need to pay for care or have other, unexpected financial obligations. Later life planning can cover everything from potential residential care costs, planning for inheritance tax, and making use of gifts and trusts – a whole range of options that can help you prepare for the later years of life.

Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Long-term care

With average residential care costs rising, preparing for this possibility is all part of responsible financial planning.

There are many factors to take into consideration when planning for future long-term care – from the choice of residential care home to the protection of some wealth for the next generation – which is why it’s essential to take expert advice. With our help, however, you can consider all the possibilities and make an informed decision about what’s best for you and your family.

Estate administration

Administering a person’s estate after they die can be a complex business, and if you choose to do it yourself, you should be aware that you may be personally liable for any mistakes made during the process.

It certainly makes sense to take expert advice on the matter, and if required, we can refer you to a trusted service provider who specialises in estate administration and can take the burden from you. From dealing with tax liabilities to dealing with specialist legal work, they can smooth the process of estate administration at what can be a difficult time for you and your family.

Wills and powers of attorney

A well written and carefully planned will is an important element in your financial planning, as without it, your assets may not end up in the hands of the people you always wanted to benefit.

Even if you already have a will, it may not match your current financial objectives or circumstances, so it’s important to have it regularly reviewed. It’s important, too, to consider the possibility that one day, you may not be physically or mentally able to make your own decisions. Powers of attorney can help make sure that only personally chosen, trusted individuals are able to look after your affairs on your behalf.

Will writing and Powers of Attorney involve the referral to a service which is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James’s Place and are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Professional trustee services

There are a number of circumstances in which setting up a trust may be a course of action we recommend as part of your overall financial plan.

From looking after assets for a beneficiary who is currently too young to take them, to protecting your estate after your death, a trust can be a useful vehicle – although it must be set up and run properly. If you need to set up a trust, we can refer you to a service provider that will look after everyone’s interests discreetly and professionally, giving you peace of mind that the trust is performing the function that it should.

Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
